Welcome to DCena
Turning a Wrestling Event into a Citywide Cultural Moment
The Opportunity
John Cena's farewell appearance in Washington, D.C. was more than another stop on WWE's tour. It was a once-in-a-generation moment for one of the most recognizable figures in sports entertainment. Rather than simply promoting a live event, our goal was to create a campaign that celebrated Cena's legacy while transforming Washington into the center of the conversation.
The Strategy
Inspired by the natural connection between D.C. and Cena, I developed the Welcome to DCena campaign, reimagining the city as "DCena" across every consumer touchpoint. The campaign extended far beyond traditional event marketing, combining social media, experiential activations, community partnerships, public relations, influencer engagement, and fan participation into one cohesive brand experience.
Fans encountered the campaign before they even entered the arena. We created citywide signage, collectible postcards, digital content, and immersive fan experiences that encouraged sharing across social media. At the arena, guests contributed to a large-scale fan message wall celebrating John Cena's career, while a live artist transformed fan messages into a one-of-a-kind commemorative painting that was later gifted to Cena. The campaign also partnered with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, raising more than $17,000 in support of children facing critical illnesses, creating an authentic community connection that reflected Cena's longstanding philanthropic legacy.
Every activation was designed with one objective: create experiences fans would want to photograph, share, and talk about long after the event ended.
The Results
The campaign became one of Monumental Sports & Entertainment's most successful earned media initiatives.
Results included:
$58 million+ in earned media value
900+ media placements across local, national, sports, and entertainment outlets
Extensive organic social sharing from fans, media, creators, and influencers
Significant engagement across owned social channels through user-generated content and campaign storytelling
Thousands of fans participated in experiential activations throughout the event
More than $17,000 raised for Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic
Established a repeatable framework for turning major live events into culturally relevant, shareable brand moments
My Role
As the marketing lead, I developed the campaign concept and oversaw its execution from strategy through launch. I collaborated with internal creative, communications, social media, operations, and partnership teams while managing cross-functional stakeholders to ensure every activation delivered a cohesive consumer experience. I directed campaign messaging, experiential elements, promotional strategy, and integrated marketing efforts while monitoring performance across social, earned media, and fan engagement.
Why It Worked
The success of Welcome to DCena wasn't driven by paid advertising alone. It came from creating a campaign that fans genuinely wanted to participate in. By blending storytelling, community involvement, experiential marketing, and real-time social engagement, we transformed a single WWE event into a citywide cultural moment that generated national attention, strengthened fan affinity, and delivered measurable business impact.
